What to Wear for Fall Family Photos in Fort Payne, AL
Fall is one of my favorite times of year for photos in North Alabama. The colors are beautiful, the weather starts cooling down, and everything just feels a little cozier.
But one of the first questions I hear after someone books a fall session is:
“What should we wear?”
The good news is that choosing outfits for fall family photos does not have to be complicated. You do not need everyone in perfectly matching clothes, and you definitely do not need to go buy an entirely new wardrobe.
The goal is simply to choose outfits that look good together, feel like you, and photograph well with the beautiful fall scenery around Fort Payne.
Start With One Outfit You Love
Instead of trying to plan everyone’s clothes at the same time, start with one person.
Usually, I recommend starting with Mom’s outfit because we tend to be the hardest on ourselves in photos. Choose something you feel comfortable and confident wearing first, and then build everyone else’s outfits around it.
Maybe that is a long dress, a cozy sweater with jeans, or a skirt with boots. Once you have that piece picked out, choose colors for the rest of the family that coordinate with it.
Think coordinated, not matching.
Everyone does not need to wear the exact same shirt or the exact same shade of blue. In fact, a little variety usually makes your family photos look more natural and gives the images more depth.
Fall Colors That Photograph Beautifully
Fall sessions are a great time to bring in warm, earthy colors.
Some of my favorites for family photos are:
Cream and ivory
Camel and tan
Olive or sage green
Rust
Mustard
Burgundy
Dusty blue
Chocolate brown
Soft denim
You can mix a few of these together without everyone wearing the same color.
For example, Mom could wear a cream dress, Dad could wear a soft blue or olive shirt, and the kids could wear a mix of tan, rust, denim, or another coordinating neutral.
These colors work especially well for outdoor family photography around Fort Payne because they complement fields, trees, barns, and the softer colors we see during a North Alabama fall.
Add Texture Instead of Busy Patterns
Texture photographs beautifully.
Think chunky sweaters, knit cardigans, denim, corduroy, linen, suede boots, or a soft dress with a little movement.
These small details add interest to your photos without distracting from your family.
Patterns are completely fine too, but I usually recommend keeping them simple. A small floral dress or subtle plaid can work beautifully.
What I would avoid is having several people in bold patterns at the same time. Large logos, neon colors, and very busy prints can pull attention away from faces—and your family should always be the focus of the photos.
A good rule is to choose one patterned piece and then use the colors from that pattern for everyone else.
Think About Your Location
Your session location can also help you decide what to wear.
If we are photographing in an open field, along a country road, or around one of the rustic barn locations I use near Fort Payne, softer neutrals and earthy colors blend beautifully with the scenery.
If there will be a lot of golden grass or warm fall colors, cream, blue, olive, brown, and rust are especially pretty.
You also want to think about shoes.
Fall sessions often mean grass, fields, or uneven ground, so choose shoes you can actually walk in. Boots, loafers, simple flats, and clean neutral sneakers can all work.
And if your little one is going to spend most of the session kicking their shoes off anyway, that is okay too.
Make Sure the Kids Are Comfortable
This one is important.
If your child hates their outfit, there is a very good chance we are going to know it.
Choose clothing they can move in, sit in, and play in. Avoid anything itchy, stiff, or so precious that you are worried about them getting a little dirt on it.
Some of my favorite images happen while families are walking, playing, cuddling, or letting the kids explore for a minute.
Comfortable kids make those natural moments much easier.
For babies and toddlers, I also recommend checking that clothes fit well when they are sitting down. Sometimes an adorable outfit looks completely different once a little one is being held or sitting in someone’s lap.
Don't Forget the Little Details
Before your fall photo session, take a quick look at the little things that are easy to forget.
Empty phones and keys from pockets. Remove hair ties from wrists. Make sure shoes are clean. Check that tags are not showing.
And if you are wearing something that needs constant adjusting, you may want to choose something else.
You should be able to enjoy your family during your session instead of worrying about your clothes the entire time.
Most Importantly, Wear Something That Feels Like You
There is no single perfect outfit for fall family photos.
Your family does not need to look like anyone else you have seen on Pinterest or Instagram.
If your family lives in jeans and boots, wear jeans and boots. If you love dresses and dressier outfits, go for it.
The best photos happen when you feel comfortable enough to relax, laugh, play with your kids, and enjoy being together.
Your clothing should complement your family—not become the main focus of the session.
